Two Acronyms, Two Different Jobs
In North America, two organizations define how windows are rated and verified. They answer different questions:
- NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) — how well does the window perform? NFRC certifies U-Factor, SHGC, VT, and air leakage, using standardized simulation and testing.
- AAMA (American Architectural Manufacturers Association) — how well is the window built? AAMA certification verifies structural performance, water resistance, and air infiltration through physical testing.
Reading an NFRC Label
Every certified window carries a label with the key performance metrics:
- U-Factor: heat transmission (lower is better)
- SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient): how much solar heat enters (0–1; choose based on climate)
- VT (Visible Transmittance): how much visible light enters (0–1; higher is brighter)
- Air Leakage: how much air passes through (lower is better)
The most important insight: these numbers describe the complete assembly, not the glass alone. Frame design, spacers, and seals all contribute—which is why two windows with the same glass can rate very differently.
What AAMA Certification Confirms
AAMA certification subjects the assembled product to wind-load, water-spray, and air-infiltration tests. For coastal and high-rise projects, these results are as important as thermal ratings: a window that leaks air and water will perform terribly in a storm, no matter how low its U-Factor.
VITRIUS Systems: Review the Current Report
VITRIUS publishes configuration-specific thermal-performance data for its window and door systems. Before final specification, request the current report for the selected series, size, and glazing package, then confirm the applicable NFRC or AAMA scope for the project.
When comparing windows, always ask for the certified numbers. If a supplier cannot produce them, the performance claims deserve scrutiny.
