What Is a U-Factor?
The U-Factor (also called U-Value) measures how much heat a window assembly transmits. NFRC labels in North America use Btu/(h·ft²·°F), while international specifications often use W/(m²·K). One Btu/(h·ft²·°F) equals approximately 5.678 W/(m²·K). The lower the number, the better the insulation: a low U-Factor means less heat escapes in winter and less heat enters in summer.
Unlike R-Value (which describes resistance to heat flow and is used mainly for insulation materials), U-Factor describes the entire assembled window: glass, frames, spacers, and seals. That is why two windows with the same glass can perform very differently—the frame and edge seals matter enormously.
How to Read a U-Factor Rating
In North America, windows are typically rated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC). Typical values are:
- Single-pane aluminum: 1.0–1.2 Btu/(h·ft²·°F) — very poor insulation
- Double-pane with thermal break: 0.30–0.45 — good
- Triple-pane Low-E with warm-edge spacer: 0.20–0.30 — excellent

A difference of 0.1 Btu/(h·ft²·°F) may sound small, but across a large glass wall it can shift annual heating and cooling costs by thousands of dollars—and dramatically improve occupant comfort near the glass.

Questions to Ask Your Window Supplier
- Is the U-Factor NFRC-certified for the complete assembly, not just the glass?
- Does the frame use a genuine thermal break (polyamide struts, not a simple air gap)?
- What U-Factor does the triple-glazed configuration achieve—and the double-glazed option?
- What are the SHGC and VT ratings? Balancing all three matters more than any single number.
