Aluminum is the architect’s favorite framing material: it is extraordinarily strong, dimensionally stable, and allows the ultra-narrow profiles that define modern minimalist design. But aluminum is also an excellent conductor of heat. Without intervention, a window frame made of solid aluminum acts like a thermal bridge, draining heat from a warm room in winter and allowing heat to pour in during summer.
What a Thermal Break Does
A thermal break is a structural barrier of low-conductivity material—typically polyamide struts reinforced with glass fiber—inserted between the interior and exterior aluminum profiles. By interrupting the continuous metal path, the frame’s insulation value improves dramatically, while the aluminum still provides the strength and slim sightlines.
At VITRIUS, thermal breaks are processed with high-precision CNC milling and polyamide strut insertion, followed by exacting milling of oversized profiles. The process supports consistent joints and weather-control performance on large-scale systems such as multi-slide doors.
Beyond the Frame: The Complete Envelope
A frame alone does not make an energy-efficient window. The complete assembly—glazing package, warm-edge spacers, gaskets, and hardware—must work together.
